These are our dogs. Yes, two of them are Pit Bulls. Each dog has their canine good citizen award. Jia-li the Shih tzu is going to be a therapy dog for kids and the elderly. Each dog plays a huge role in rehabilitating and socializing each Chihuahua that enters the rescue. Our dogs have endless patience and show each rescue how to interact properly with other dogs.
Recycled Ruffs Chihuahua Rescue is a small home-based foster care rescue that started in Fort Collins, Colorado in December of 2010. The founder; Tammy King (myself) started the rescue because Kaden (the brown and tan Chi) is the most loving and perceptive dog. When I was having a lot of medical issues, Kaden would jump on me and paw at my face when my blood sugar would drop. He really helped me stop and pay attention to my body. I recovered after several months of tests, and a brush with a serious, permanent illness. Soon after that I lost my first rescue dog, "Cheyenne", who was a female Pit Bull. She always thought she was a lap dog. She passed suddenly with a diagnoses of cancer. After these two experiences, I vowed to myself that I would live life to the fullest and make sure that other dogs do not pass in an untimely manner. My husband and my mom are my biggest supporters!
Every year thousands of dogs are euthanized in Colorado shelters. I have volunteered at several shelters throughout Canada (where I'm from) and in Colorado. Throughout the years I have always had a soft spot for the "under dogs". I also noticed that, of course, all dogs do not like being in a shelter envirnoment, but the shelter is especially difficult for the Chihuahuas. They are so sensitive and loyal to their people that the shelter just breaks their spirits and hearts. So RRCR's mission is to ensure that there are less Chihuahuas(hopefully none one day) in the shelters in Colorado. We also take in owner surrenders, mostly from owners that have passed away or have become too ill or elderly to care for their companions. We are committed to rescuing Chihuahuas and Chihuahua mixes to ensure that they are placed in forever, loving homes. RRCR has a policy where we will take back any dog that has been adopted without penalties if need be. Under no circumstances will any of our dogs return to a shelter!
We vet check every Chihuahua that comes into the rescue. RRCR spays/neuters, vaccinates, heart worm tests, microchips, and does any other vet care needed for every dog. Our adoption fee is just to cover our vet bills, and that does not always get completely reimbursed. With that said, are adoption fees are: $200 for adult dogs (over 1 yr), $250 for puppies(under 1yr), and in addition, we give a senior citizen discount for our adopters over 65 at $100, our senior dogs 10 yrs and older are also at the discounted rate. Please visit our dogs on www.adoptapet.com and on www.petfinder.com and we are also on rescueme.org!
